CD Reviews

The group has potential for the future
George Dionne | Cape Cod, MA | 12/11/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The Good

"These Strange Lives Inside" displays a lot of progressive influence in its delivery. "Fly in Form" adds a slight Red Hot Chili Peppers funk feel into its progressive grooves. "Mist of Black Fire" will take you on a cosmic journey with minimal rhythms and lots of eerie vocals. The track emits more power and emotion as it reaches the end. "North of Bloody" is almost a dead on tribute to Incubus. Echoed vocals and the pitter-patter of drums control the pace of "Awkward Wings." Rather than ending on subtle note, The Vital Might pack a ton of energy into the closing track "Palillo." Vocalist Andy Milk takes a stab at falsetto here as well.

The Bad

Sounds like a lot of other progressive/alternative acts. Songs tend to have one steady sound with no musical arc.

The Verdict

Obsidian displays a lot of the modern progressive/alternative sounds heard on the radio today, but The Vital Might fails to find a sound of their own. Despite that, the album is still good. All groups have to start somewhere, and even though Obsidian sounds like a rookie effort, it shows that the group has potential for the future."
