Culled from their Vee-Jay Recordings, The Best Of The Staple Singers finds the group in the midst of their acoustic gospel folk style. It attracted a growing audience, one which would literally explode when they moved to Stax and pursued a more R&B tinged style, but this album is worth listening to in order to fully appreciate the vocal harmony Pops, Cleotha, Pervis, Yvonne and Mavis were able to pull off. Nowhere is this better exemplified than on the two best known Vee-Jay tracks, Uncloudy Day and Will The Circle Be Unbroken, which also hint at a leaning towards jazz.
