Album Description 2009 release from the British Funk/Acid Jazz outfit. As with previous records, Ten Years On presents an impressive range of grooves and styles, all sheltering from the grey English drizzle under a big Jazz-Funk umbrella. There's the familiar vintage-sounding production, courtesy of guitarist and bandleader Eddie Roberts. The album has guests aplenty: JD73 plays Rhodes on 'Dusty Groove', lending it a distinctly Headhuntersish sound. Seattle-based sax experimentalist Skerik adds dark, lush textures to the eight-minute soundtrack opus 'OOOM'. Fellow Leeds luminary Sam Bell brings the percussion to Eddie's Benson-eque Disco-Jazz on 'Cielo' while Madrid-based Chip Wickham toots a mean flute on 'Chocolate Chip'. One Note. Similar CDs

CD ReviewsAnother delicious helping of funk The Delite Rancher | Phoenix, Arizona | 12/01/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "As the latest New Mastersounds release, "Ten Years On" is another asset in the band's ever-expanding discography. This is the same time tested recipe of funky rock that contains heavy doses of soul and jazz. The musical meal is infused with Eddie Roberts' delicious guitar work. Like white on rice, his signature riff is all over "Ten Years On." On drums, Simon Allen holds the fort down and Pete Shand's bass keeps the groove going. Filling in the shoes of former member Bob Birch, Joe Tatton does some nice work on the keys. 'Flimsy' features an especially memorable piano solo. Compared to earlier releases, there are fewer and shorter organ solos as the guitar moves to the front. It wouldn't really be a New Mastersounds album without guests. There are some old favorites like Sam Bell and some fresh contributions made by Skerik and JD73. The band has always had an appreciation for the jazz flute. On this project, it is Chip Wickham whose handiwork adds sweetness to the recipe with 'Chocolate Chip.' The guitar work on 'The Road to Fuji Rock' makes the tune a highlight. The disco inspired keyboards on 'Cielo' work for variety sake. 'Narcolepsy' pays homage to what Miles Davis was doing in the late 60s. The mood is upbeat and most of this project is very danceable. The production achieves that same vintage sound that has become a sonic signature for the band. "Ten Years On" falls slightly short of albums like "This Is What We Do" and "102%." Comparatively, the melodies and arrangements are a bit less interesting. That written, this is still a fantastic album. For those who've been seeing this band live and collecting their studio work, "Ten Years On" is another fun ride into funky town."
