CD Reviews

One of the most overlooked albums of the 90's !!!
Vincent Arquillière | Warsaw, Poland | 10/11/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This record (released on Rough Trade in Europe and Shimmy Disk in the US) is now hard to find, and it's a shame. "The Mabuses" is a very unique record, with melodies never heard before, extremely strange lyrics, great singing and guitar playing. The band was compared to XTC or The Monochrome Set because of its British eccentricity, but the world of Kim Fahy (the band is almost only him) is much darker. This was produced by Shimmy Disk's Kramer, so you can expect some very twisted music. After that, The Mabuses released a 2nd album "The Melbourne Method", overproduced and less inspired, but containing a few great tracks. I suppose nobody bought it and Fahy, a brainy philosophy student, has never come back to music, alas. Maybe he's a great philosopher now, but pop music has lost a very brilliant and oblique songwriter."

"This first album received great critical acclaim upon its release in 1992. The songs here are nearly all classic pop tunes tinged with dark overtones. Excellent and intricate guitar playing accompanied by baffling lyrics from which emerges a world of malevolent barbers, lunatics, mercy seats, car crashes, train journeys delivered in upbeat humor.
Monty Python meets the Wizard of Oz.
A great album!"
