Product Description The John Henry of popular folklore, and immortalized in dozens of traditional folk songs, was a giant of a man who labored laying railway tracks and digging tunnels. He challenged the first steam powered drilling machine to a race to determine what was stronger, man or machine. His superhuman effort won him the race, after which he immediately died of exhaustion. We picked the The John Henrys for our name because the story is such an inspiration, says vocalist/ guitarist Rey Sabatin Jr, whose First Nations and Acadian heritage, along with his day job as a luthier, are reflected in the band's Cajun influenced yet precise musical arrangements. Rey, along with Steve Tatone (keyboards) Doug Gouthro (Guitar) Daryl Quinlan (Bass), and Geoff Ward (Drums) have been creating music and working together since 2003, writing, arranging and rehearsing so many songs that they have trouble deciding what to play in a live set. The title track boasts their harmonies layered on a driving beat, "Because it pours like the sunshine and shines like the rain, where everyone goes; And it's as cold as a shoulder every time she turns to go, where everyone goes, Everyone knows." "Lost in the Canyon" is a disconcerting uptempo ballad, "Find a spot on the bank where the water runs wild, I'm going on up to the cabin down on the river, Got to get this lonely heart delivered." "Ain't Gonna Drink No More" is sweet & short with guitar & mandolin exchanging lightning leads on the break. Rey Sabain takes the lead on a flat-out rocker "Thought Yourself Lucky," "I guess burning's never been your thing cause you can burn & crash & freeze; But when the liquor starts to flow pretty mama, that's when you shake your knees." The set doesn't slow down until the seventh track "Truth Be Told" which marries a distinctive melody & Sabain's excellent lyric, "Truth be told, I was a puppet on her string; Truth be said, I'd be better left for dead & she'd be better off without me; The lies I've sowed almost everyday in these hours, we're gonna let 'em slip away." The set concludes with crowd pleaser "Golden Train." One thing I like about the set is that although Rey Sabain appears to be the most accomplished songwriter, three of the other four band members also get their songs and vocals laid down. "Sweet As the Grain" is an excellent CD that fans of The Band & an authentic country/rock sound will love. Enjoy!" John Henrys Good B.
