Synopsis

Album Description
The sound and style of Hoagy Carmichael come alive in this first release by The Hoagies, an eclectic combo of guitar, mandolin and bass out of Denver, Colorado. There's a certain character to his songs, his recordings, and his personality -- this black-and-white image in your mind of the old crooner jangling away at the 88?s, hat pushed back and Lucky Strike dangling from his mouth, bringing a smile to the tipsy patrons of the smoky nightclub. It?s good-hearted, goodtime music that grabbed this trio from the first listen, and its that spirit that they've infused into their style. Hoagy Carmichael and the Hoagies?always cool, always swinging, and always smooth.

CD Reviews

One of my favorite Christmas gifts

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Any bride-to-be worth her rice will tell you; to look your best, dress those bridesmaids down. At the very least, fatten their legs with a mid-calf hem.

So forgive us grimacing when we saw heretofore unknown songwriter Scott Johnson's "Iowa" standing at the altar flanked by beauties from legends Hoagy Carmichael and Louis Jordan.

C'mon - Hoagy he ain't.

Or is he?

"Iowa" might well have been channeled by Johnson from Carmichael. It's lyrics, composition and execution are stunningly Carmichael-esque in "Smooth" from The Hoagies. Produced by Johnson's Scotnik Records, "Smooth" will appeal to even those who are not clear on what a "record" is. This CD is toe-tappingly rich, without being too sweet to savor. Johnson (guitar & vocals), Mike Billings (mandolin & vocals), Dave Ball (bass), and some talented friends get swinging and do not stop with classics like "Two Sleepy People" (Frank Loesser/Carmichael), "Is You Or Is You Ain't" (Billy Austin/Jordan) and "The Very Thought of You" (Ray Noble). Mandolin work by Billings and, on several tracks, Charlie Provenza, is exacting with its ebbs and flows that punctuate here and serenade there on covers and originals. Vocals by Johnson and Billings are perfectly imperfect, suggesting a live performance happened in that Boulder studio.

I received this as a gift from a Denver-based friend, listened with surpirse, then made room on my iPod for 17 new tracks - including a stunning one dressed in white.

Here come da Hoagies."
