Better and better

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Harry and the Quartet keep getting better, when getting better doesn't seem possible. (Check him out on David Berger's I Had The Craziest Dream album, which I executive-produced on the condition that Harry [and Joe Temperley]be featured.) Here, adding John Allred and,for some cuts, Scott Hamilton lets Harry show off the conceptual and arranging talent that is so evident from his presentation of standards in the quartet context. In his new book, Wyton Marsalis says jazz can be defined as a melding of The Swing and The Blues. Harry is widely and rightly acknowledged as a master of swing, but on any and every tune you can tell he is ALSO a master of The Blues. Not that most of these tunes are blues. But they don't have to be for you to hear it."
