Synopsis

Album Description
If End of a Hollywood was a musical odyssey though Serge Gainsborough pop stylings and Smiths-like keening vocals and epic guitarwork, then Nor the Dahlias' is a romp with the Brit boys Pulp and Blur in the early 90s heyday of up beats, tongue in cheek sarcasm and divine musical comedies where all the sad, serious clowns could be happy and the carnival of life was an almost dizzying kaleidoscope of melodies, harmonies and pop sensibilities. Nor the Dahlias has everything to do with how the Dears got from there to here. And since, as singer Murray Lightburn promises, you will never hear any of these songs live, snap up the Dears' final Grenadine release: Nor the Dahlias: The Dears 1995-1998

CD Reviews

Very VERY good!
Sir Grand Citizen | Earth | 02/11/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"My only complaint regarding this (obvious stop-gap) release is that it's too short, clocking in at roughly 35 minutes long.
All the same, quality over quantity, the songs are great. They'll burrow a hole into your head and refuse to leave for days on-end. Much more pop-py and bright (when compared to their heavier masterworks ie. NO CITIES LEFT), this album is a collection of earlier material, very brit-pop, very catchy, very worth the money."
BUY NO CITIES LEFT!!!

"FIRSTLY, Buy No Cities LeftThen Orchestral Pop Noir RomantiqueThen End of a Hollywood Bedtime StoryThen, if you feel like it, this piece of poo.It sounds like they did this with a four track recorder in a garage and the songs blow. I've seen them live, they are not like this crap at all, they are AMAZING!!!there is even liner notes that says this really isn't even the dears as we know them today....."
Solid collection of tunes
Andrew R. Patton | Columbus, OH United States | 07/18/2002

"This is a compilation of older tracks from the Dears, recorded before the Montreal band became famous (well, to Canadian indie fans I guess), and it's a fun bunch of tunes. Their Britpop influences, like Blur and the Smiths, are very obvious on some tracks, but they're still groovy! Good indie pop with bounce and attitude!"
