Ideally, Britten's A Ceremony of Carols should be performed with a choir of boys to fully capture the innocent playfulness of childhood suggested in the music and texts. But, if you want to put that job in the hands of adult female singers, the sopranos of Trinity College Choir should be the ones you choose. What you may lose in "innocence" you gain in mature, polished technique, especially noticeable in the quick turns in "Wolcum Yole," and in performance savvy. This generous 80-minute program, which features sopranos again in the Missa Brevis and the entire Trinity College Choir on Rejoice in the Lamb, A Hymn to the Virgin, Hymn to St. Cecilia, and Sacred and Profane, is a magnificently sung tribute to Britten's choral music.
