CD Reviews

Just past the peak, but still VERY good
D.V. Lindner | King George, VA, USA | 03/06/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Perhaps not as strong as the previous works "Power To The People," and "A Lonely Man," this is still a very worthy September 1973 Chi-Lites album fueled by the jamming dance single "Stoned Out of My Mind" (from July), followed by "I Found Sunshine" (November) and "Homely Girl" (January '74).And if you're looking for some soul soap opera in the vein of "A Letter To Myself," "Have You Seen Her," or "The Coldest Days of My Life," this album has still got you covered. Though it wasn't a single, this LPs cornerstone is surely "I Never Had It So Good And Felt So Bad." Complete with trademark Chi-Lite spoken passages, for five minutes lead singer Eugene Record laments a year after the fact that divorce, despite it's freedom, isn't the pure pleasure he imagined it would be: `the grass is growing tall, and I'm gettin' kinda fat...'. Incorporating this sense of humor, the song still has the full measure of production genius and vocal prowess of their better-known titles, and will single-handedly insure that you don't regret this purchase. And "Stoned Out of My Mind" will still get you as joyously on your feet as it did 30 years ago. This one was originally Brunswick LP No. 754197."
