CD Reviews

Made My Day and My Jazz cd Collection
Steven Fernow | Salt Lake City, Utah | 05/14/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Kudos to the people who decided to reissue this previously out-of-print gem. Last year, I got what I think was the last copy from another on-line source, having searched assiduously in every known source of recorded music. In short, this is a MUST-HAVE ! CD for anyone who likes large ensemble jazz. It's rare for me to listen to a CD straight through, but there is not a clunker in the whole disc, from Holman's haunting rendition of Jimmy Rowles' "The Peacocks" to the swinging "Make My Day," this disc both smokes and evokes, appealing both to my critical, heady snobbism and to my raw, visceral feeling. In fact, if you can listen to "Make My Day" without it getting your foot atapping and your spirits asoaring, you're either deaf or don't have a pulse. This disc is panoramic in scope, yet richly textured and finely nuanced, exquisite and loving attention to detail given in every gesture, from instrument selection to choice of soloist. I don't think there is anything less than a superb note in the whole disc. Apart from the content, this disc cannot be beat in terms of sound quality, transcending the usual limitations of digital bits, providing the warmth and texture one associates with great analog recording--definitely worth paying the higher price for the audiophile edition. Because I'd be devastated if anything happened to my copy of this masterpiece, I'm about to order another copy for back-up, leaving me to wonder if JVC will reissue also this disc's predecessor from the late 80's. Thanks again for affording the jazz community another opportunity to savor mainstrem jazz's most brilliant contemporary practitioner!"
