Synopsis

Product Description
There's something ultimate about London's The Big Pink. It's as though they've compressed everything that's great about post-war music into their sound. They're as accessible as a pop group, with almost folkishly warm melodies, the spiritual quality of soul and gospel, the rhythmic propulsion of rave, the white noise of punk, the glitchy textures of electronica, and the heavy drones of your favourite New York rock bands past and present.

CD Reviews

Astonishing Debut
KA | NYC Metro | 09/24/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The music album is dead or soon will be. My teenage niece and nephew and their friends don't seem to buy albums. They may buy (or download by other...ahem...free methods) one song or maybe two. So with the oncoming demise of the album concept, this is the first album in a long while that made me take some notice.

I would like to think that I keep my ear to the music rail for the latest and greatest but then again I am a 41 year old man who is more interested these days in getting a good night's sleep on a Friday night. So really, what do I know? No, really.

That said, I am still a 41 year old man who still likes to dig for music. Always have and always will. I am constantly introducing my partner to new music. On Sunday mornings as he and I are throwing together our breakfast fare I am usually treating him to the easy listening sort of music but I decided to throw him to the deep end and have him listen to The Big Pink. It's a little out of his range but he's actually enjoying the album. He loves to rock out to "At War With the Sun" and "Tonight" which is funny, funny, funny to watch.

"A Brief History of Love" is a great album but on one hand I honestly don't know what to make of it all. In there lies the lure of "A Brief History of Love." It's a mix of everything from, in no particular order: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Empire of the Sun, My Bloody Valentine, LCD Soundsystem and, I swear, The Clash, even with a the title "A Brief History of Love." I hear hear all of these influences and yet The Big Pink make it all their own which is why I think they may be a band with which to be reckoned.

This band hails from the 4AD label, home to many a great band and I think these boys are potentially poised from something great. One can never tell really. This is one hell of a stunning starlight debut and now for the fledgling band, the pressure will be on, for better or worse."
Great Debut

"well, I can't really give this 5 stars as there is one or two tracks i'm not too fond of, but this is an overall excellent debut. if you like Jesus & the Mary Chain, BRMC, Darker My Love and countless other shoegazer rock like I do, then you will love this album. solid, rocking, sweeping and a really fun listen. Track 10(Tonight)is my favorite and worth the price of the CD alone-I can't stop listening to this!"
Thanks TBP!

"From one music lover to another, this is pure brilliance from start to finish - full stop. Sure, plenty of bands may come to mind when first giving it a listen, but The Big Pink's sound has an originality about it that will consume your soul - promise."
