It's bizarre at first to hear Mexican diva Thalia's biggest pop hits adorned with blaring horns and oompah beats, but she ultimately pulls it off on Banda Thalia Grandes Exitos. Thalia has enlisted a solid lineup of musicians and producers for the project, but this is hardly banda music in its purest form. Cumbia and pop rhythms regularly find their way into many of the tracks. The slick collection revisits--and reimagines--Thalia's most successful singles since joining EMI Latin in 1995, making for an uneven but interesting project. Tracks such as the already festive "Amor a la Mexicana" and "Por Amor" work well within the traditional banda setting, while ballads "Quiero Hacerte el Amor" and "Entre el Mar y una Estrella" drag a bit and are best showcased in their original arrangements. "Arrasando," the title track off Thalia's stellar 2000 album, is sapped of its energy, but the inclusion of traditional gems "Cuco Pena" and "La Revancha" is a genuine treat. Through it all, Thalia remains an authoritative--and irresistible--presence. --Joey Guerra

CD Reviews

An Alternative Album

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I think it is a matter of taste whether you're going to like this CD or not. If you are a Thalia fan, a latin dancer, a Mexican or a lover of banda music, don't hesitate a second! In case you can't do without the loud beats of discotheque and modern orchestrations, this album doesn't do for you. If you are somewhere in between, think if modern songs orchestrated in a more traditional but festive way could be an alternative choice among your CDs and a way to let off steam and unwind. Personally, I love it! It was a surprise Thalia preferred to make a BEST OF collection by rerecording her greatest hits in another music style. This means "Thalia con banda" is a carefully done production through which Thalia had a chance to reinvent her songs and (why not) herself as a singer! Many of the songs remain catchy: "Amor A La Mexicana", "Piel Morena", "Rosalinda", "Por Amor", "Maria La Del Barrio", by far the best among really beautiful songs!! Couldn't they be beautiful? We are talking about a "greatest hits" album!! In a nutshell, this is an ALTERNATIVE album, the choice is up to you!!!"

"I will say, first that I LOVED Arrasando, it was Thalia's best album. This one, takes a bit getting used to and I think it would have been a superb record if she would have recorded ACTUAL songs written specifically for the gender rather than a greatest hits record. Nevertheless, its a very good record and although some songs do not work in this format, she made a great effort and did the best she could with the translations from pop to banda. I would suggest her next effort be true banda songs which would give her more credibility and an opportunity to dig into the work. In this case, she succeeded, but I think the songs would have served her better if they were truly banda compositions. in this case, she was working with her hands tied behind her back, so I give her 4 stars. Can't wait for the English record next year"
