Who are the Gyrlz?
Joshua I. Littles IV | APO, AE United States | 08/16/2003

"The Gyrlz
The first genuine New Jill Swing act, the Gyrlz were formed in the USA during 1987 by Terri, Monica and Tara. Their initial demo tapes were produced by the omnipresent Teddy Riley and Kyle West. `When we recorded our demos with Teddy he was still living in the St. Nicholas Projects in Harlem. Those were the good old days' remembers Terri. They thence met up with Uptown Records' mainman Andre Harrell, who asked them, via the intervention of Heavy D, to record an album. They enjoyed minor success with Wishing You Were Here, before joining Al. B. Sure as backing singers on his Heartbreak tour. From there they became the opening act for Bobby Brown and New Edition, but split at the end of the tour. `We were lost rebels without much of a cause and with nowhere to go' is how Monica painfully records the experience. Terri returned to New York, briefly singing for Key West, another Uptown band who never released an album, before moving back to Philadelphia. There she decided to reunite with Monica, as Terri And Monica, with Tara becoming their manager. This female trio of 3 were back up singers for most of the hot acts at the legendary Uptown/MCA record compnay back in the late 80's. Teddy Riley and Kyle West produced there demo tape and this was even before Teddy Riley blew up. Incredible solid album's which are "Love Me or Leave Me" and "Systa". I can honestly say if you have a system either at home or in your ride, be prepared for a nice sound treat! My favorite cuts are the slow ones I.E. "It's all because of you" "It's Over" and the one cut that I really jam to is "Do you want me?" All of these songs are off the "Love me or Leave me LP". A definite must have... and fellas... there are a couple a tracks to put that special woman in the mood! Oh, by the way... if anybody needs a copy of the THE GYRLZ- "LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME" album."

"A NICE BLEND OF R&B AND NEW JILL SWING! TERRI DID ALOT OF WRITING WITH BAD BOY RECORDS BACK IN THE DAY. THEY USED TO BE IN "THE GYRLZ" AND WORKED WITH AL B. SURE! THIS ALBUM IS HOT AND WAS SLEPT ON WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. THE HOT TRACKS INCLUDE: "OVER IT", "I'VE BEEN WAITING", "TEMPTATION" AND "WHERE ARE YOU NOW?". THE SONGS HAVE A HIP-HOP FEEL, BUT THEY ARE NOT OVER-PRODUCED. THE GYRLZ COULD HANG WITH BRANDY, ASHANTI OR MONICA ANYDAY! THEY CO-WROTE SOME MATERIAL TOO! THIS IS A GOOD PIECE OF 90'S R&B. YOU CANT BEAT IT! COP IT NOW!"
