CD Reviews

LITTLE GIRL WITH A HUGE VOICE
john szotowski | ottawa, ontario Canada | 05/07/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I ALWAYS LIKED THE SOUND OF TERESA, SWEET & POWERFUL. WHEN I GOT THIS CD FROM THE BEAR FAMILY, I WAS ABSOLUTELY AWE-STRUCK. CHECK OUT THE TITLES. NOT A SINGLE DUDD. SOME SWEET LOVE SONGS & SOME REAL ROCKIN' ONES (BREWER STYLE). IF YOU LIKE LADY SINGERS, THEN THIS ONE IS A CERTAIN MUST."
Not "Explicit".
George Slivinsky | Winnipeg Canada | 12/18/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As John said there are no duds here. Fast or slow all the songs are great. Tho the theme is teenage romance, the compositions are mature. But who labelled it "explicit lyrics"? That is a stupid misuse of what is supposed to be a useful warning for vulgarity in modern music. These songs are innocent romance. Would someone justify that?"
Wonderful compilation avoiding the obvious
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 10/09/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This compilation is typical in style of Teresa's fifties music with rock'n'roll songs to get your toes, outstanding ballads and the occasional novelty songs. Also typical of Teresa is the diverse mix of genres - R+B, country and jazz all blended into one fantastic sound. All the really big hits are missing although a few American hits are included, so anybody who has a hits collection will end up with some duplication but not a lot.

The set opens with Hula-hoop song, now regarded as a novelty song. Nevertheless, I remember hula-hoops (yes, I'm that old) and I think this song captures the spirit of the craze. I was never any good at it, but I remember, as a child, wiggling my body trying to keep that hoop from dropping to the ground.

My favorites here are On Treasure Island, Empty arms, Pledging my love, Dark moon, Teardrops in my heart, Gone and Jingle bell rock. These songs are all covers but they are as good as any other versions I've heard - and I've heard some good ones. Who wouldn't want to head for Treasure Island after hearing Teresa sing about it.

If you already have most of Teresa's hits and want more songs in a similar vein, this is for you. If you haven't got a hits collection, you should buy one of those first. Such a collection will contain (among other songs) Music music music, Till I waltz again with you, Ricochet, Let me go lover, A tear fell and A sweet old fashioned girl.

Bear Family released this set some years ago. While I'm pleased with it, I wish they'd give Teresa the boxed set treatment, just as they did for Doris Day and Connie Francis."
