CD Reviews

Atypical set with crossover appeal
J. Levinson | Media, PA USA | 08/03/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"On this atypical set by pianist Rosenthal, the opening title cut features a pop-like vocal by Donald Harrison, who also contributes on soprano and tenor sax. The song "Calling You" was the Academy Award nominated centerpiece of the soundtrack to the West German film "Bagdad Cafe", written by Bob Telson and performed on the soundtrack by Jevetta Steele. The rest of the album is relatively straightahead with worthy solos from Donald Harrison, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and guitarist Kevin Eubanks. Some of the songs utilize funky rhythms, extra percussion and a couple of brass players. Rosenthal's playing throughout is consistent. Even with the extra production values this set is worth picking up by hard bop collectors, with a good degree of crossover appeal to the mainstream audience. Thanks to the All-Music Guide and the All-Movie Guide for some of the above info."
