CD Reviews

Soulful account of Serenade for Strings!
Scriabinmahler | UK | 12/16/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"
Tchaikovsky's 2nd symphony is brilliantly and sensitively played, but the music itself is probably the composer's poorest work. There are charming moments here and there, but the rest is just uninspired themes and meaningless development of them, throughout all movements.

Serenade for Strings is, in contrast, one of Tchaikovsky's great achievements and the composer himself loved it, always cunducting it as starter piece in concerts. Svetlanov gives one of the most deeply felt accounts of the work ever committed on CD. Unlike Ormandy and Karajan, Svetlanov's reading is very Russian through and through, letting strings sing soul out. He also draws very warm and rustic kind of beauty out of the work. Far better than Bernstein's exaggerated and disjointed Sony recording or Stokowsky's all smooth Philips recording."
