CD Reviews

Matacic is a Yogoslavian.
Issei Takechi | Saitama, Japan | 03/20/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The reviewer below states that Matacic is a Czech conductor. To my knowledge he is Yugoslavian. And I don't think that he died while conducting, though I could be wrong there. Anyway, these peformcances of Tchaikovsky's last two symphonies are in every way great; they are powerfully impassioned, demonstrating Matacic's firm grasp of these perennial scores. These performances are now separately available from Denon and may be obtained through Amazon.co.japan or HMV Japan."
Supraphon excellent

"this recording is excellent. Lovro was not a Czech conductor, but he was from Yugoslavia. The cd offers a good description in English, French amongst others. It sure gives the music its place. With or without out explanation one will notice soon that these recvording is superb. The explanation is luxury which for this time is really added value. I really enjoy this recording. I bought this one for budget-price. When this would be offered for a different price I would ofcourse have had doubts. Intense music."
An amazing performance of "Pathetique"
Sungu Okan | Istanbul, Istanbul Turkey | 09/13/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"(This review applies to Symphony No.6 "Pathetique" only)Lovro von Matacic and his Czech PO are superb. Still, Matacic, well known a conductor of (especially) Tchaikovsky and Bruckner.
(i suppose, his Bruckner Symphony No. 7 recording with Czech PO is available on Supraphon...)Matacic is one of the most distinguished Czech conductors (with V. Neumann, V. Talich etc.). He was dead when conducting in a concert(!) (because of heart disease like D. Mitropuolus, J. Keilberth, G. Sinopoli etc!)...His repertoire was, be constitued especially Late Romantics...This recording made in 60's and performance is impressive. Matacic's tempi in first movement may be a little fast, but even so good. i like, especially performance of last movement..very influence, effective, impressive...and continuous Contrbasses at last minutes are very good. They played that, as if the last palpitation of the heart of Tchaikovsky...This recording is hifghly recommended for Symphony No. 6..."
