Muti seems to be at a loss

"I've rarely heard a major conductor who seems as out of sorts with Tchaikovsky's gorgeous ballets than Muti. He begins Swan Lake at a crawl and proceeds to find nothing but slack, listless rhythms most of the time thereafter. Strange form a conductor who had a reputation for being a firebrand in Verdi. The Gramophone greatly admired EMI's recording, calling it the best-sounding that the company had ever made. I'm puzzled, but there's no doubt that the Philadelphia Orch. plays beautifully. But they also seem quite uninvolved. The best thing to be said for this CD is that it can be had for under a dollar at Amazon Marketplace, so it's a boon for anyone starting out their collection on a shoestring budget."
