Here's a disc that ought to have the title, "The Really Pretty Tchaikovsky." The Serenade has long been one of his most popular "neo- classical" pieces, and Sir Neville Marriner turns in a charming performance--not the last word in emotional warmth, perhaps, but vigorous and immaculately played. The Nutcracker Suite goes similarly well. Each dance is sharply characterized, and the whole thing sounds so easy and pleasant that you might as well just relax and wallow in the euphonious sounds. Long a prime recommendation at Christmastime, this album deserves to be taken out for a spin during the rest of the year too. --David Hurwitz

A Holiday Favorite

"While not technically a Christmas album, this probably spends as much time in my CD player during the holidays as any of my more traditional Christmas albums. The music may be overly familiar even to the casual fan (who won't recognize "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy," "Russian Dance" or "Waltz of the Flowers"?), but just like Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" or Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," it's just not Christmas without "The Nutcracker." [The CD also includes "Serenade for Strings in C," which more than doubles the playing time to 51:40.] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

"When one thinks of The Nutcracker, this is what comes to mind. The playing is excellent, the sound quality is perfect, and the tempo of the pieces is just right. Waltz of the Flowers is my personal favorite, though each track is fantastic. In addition to the wonderful rendition of The Nutcracker, you also have Serenade for Strings in C, which is a great work itself. Many will recognize Walzer Moderato, as it appears quite frequently in commercials. This doesn't detract from the piece by any means, though.

I stumbled upon this CD by chance, but now I'm certainly glad to own it. This is a great purchase for both veterans of the genre and casual listeners; I have no qualms about awarding it 5 stars."
