Problematical

"I wish I could like this CD better than I do. It was originally released in 1993, rather early in Domingo's conducting career. There is little doubt that Domingo has a real feel for Tchaikovsky's music. His interpretations are generally slow and lovingly phrased, and his ideas certainly are interesting. The problem is that his conducting is not technically secure. There are too many passages where the orchestra is just chugging along, trying to stay together while phrasing in a four square manner. It's really disappointing, especially since the sound engineering, apparently in a church, is really terrific, with thrilling brass sound balanced against strings that often sound quite beautiful. The two vocal selections go quite well, although I am the last one to be able to tell you how good Domingo's Russian is. It is notable, though, that the orchestra plays better for Randall Behr in the arias than it does for Domingo in the other selections. I would recommend this solely to Domingo's fans, even at the low price."
