CD Reviews

Taylor Haskins "has" no "kins", as a composer/trumpeter...
Mark Shilansky | boston | 11/14/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an unmitigated masterpiece. Haskins fuses his love for jazz with his fascination for the eloquence of pop music and his mastery of techno and trip hop groove music; the music is played live and acoustically; themes are stated and developed upon, but not over-expounded-upon (no long winded solos); beautiful sweeping melodies and intimate, interactive ensemble playing... In the interest of full disclosure, I know the guy and play music with him, but this does not diminish the validity of my review, as I hate most trumpet players. Buy this record, and recommend it to others! It should satisfy most listeners of "serious" jazz, as well as novices who like pretty, groovy music. People who like Bill Frisell, Peter Apfelbaum, Miles Davis late 60's and beyond, Dave Holland, Squarepusher, or anything produced by Jon Brion would dig this record. Warning: it is not boring "love jazz," although if you like people like Chris Botti or Najee, you will like this even more... give it a try."
