Synopsis

Product Description
TALKING HEADS PLAY MATERIAL FROM ACROSS THEIR CAREER ON THIS 1983 RADIO BROADCAST This superb radio broadcast recording captures Talking Heads live at the Saratoga Springs Performance Center set in the lush environs of Saratoga Spa State Park in New York State during the summer of 1983. At this stage in their career, Talking Heads were at an artistic peak, having progressed from their initial spiky art-punk stance into something much funkier and more ethnically diverse in inspiration. Crucially, bassist Tina Weymouth and her husband, drummer Chris Frantz, had also formed the successful dance-oriented splinter group, Tom Tom Club, in 1981. At the time of this performance Talking Heads had just begun a very extensive tour of the USA, in support of their 'Speaking In Tongues' album, released three months earlier at the end of May. The tour had started just a few days prior to this gig, in Springfield, Massachusetts, on 2nd August, and it finally wound up at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, California on 16th December. This period became known amongst fans as the year of the big suit in honour of front man David Byrne's comically over-sized stage attire, and the tour was immortalized in director Jonathan Demme's highly acclaimed concert movie 'Stop Making Sense'. The film was shot over a three night stint at the climax of the tour in Hollywood, and was released late the following year. For this tour the core Talking Heads quartet of David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz were augmented by a further five musicians: Bernie Worell (Synthesizer) and Lynn Mabry (Backing Vocals) - both of whom had also played with P-Funk maestro George Clinton s Parliament and Funkadelic - Ednah Holt (Backing Vocals), previously with disco stars The Ritchie Family, guitarist Alex Weir, formerly of Funk/R&B outfit The Brothers Johnson, and percussionist Steve Scales, who had worked (and continued to work) on a variety of Talking Heads projects and those of its members. The material performed in the set encompasses the breadth of the Heads and its members output. The mesmerizing classic Psycho Killer is drawn from the debut album, Talking Heads 77 and an extended workout on their compelling hit single cover of Al Green's Take Me to the River, came from the group s sophomore release 'More Songs About Buildings and Food'. Heaven, Cities, Life During Wartime and I Zimba were all originally featured on 1979's 'Fear of Music'. Their Brian Eno-produced 1980 gold album 'Remain in Light' is recalled by outstanding versions of both of its singles, Once in a Lifetime and Houses in Motion. Amongst the band members varied side-projects, David Byrne's score for Twyler Tharp s dance event 'The Catherine Wheel' (1981) is represented by live versions of Big Blue Plymouth and Big Business, and the Tom Tom Club's early hit Genius of Love also makes a welcome appearance in the set. Talking Heads own current album 'Speaking In Tongues' is showcased by excellent versions of Burning down the House, Home (This Must be the Place?) and Girlfriend is Better (from whose lyric Demme s film-title Stop Making Sense was drawn).
