CD Reviews

Farlow Norvo Mingus
SW | Australia | 11/17/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The Red Norvo Trio Savoy Sessions make up the first cd of this set, making it well worth the purchase price. The other 3 cds are early Farlow / Norman Granz sessions which are also worth having, but more likely to already be in your collection.

Check the price! Get it!"

"This is a wonderful set. As noted above, the first cd is Norvo, Mingus, and Farlow, but just the first cd, and so only the masters, not the alternate takes. The remastering is a work of art. I found it better than Savoy's two disc set of Norvo's complete works in the trio. If you don't have any Tal Farlow, or any of the Red Norvo trio work, (some of the best that any of those three magnificent musicians made), this is an excellent purchase. I would also recommend this it to anyone with much Farlow in their collection because the sound makes this music a revelation. And the price makes this four cd set less than the cost of a double burger, large fries, and a large drink.

One of the reasons Tal is important is because he was the first post-Christian guitarist who didn't try to emulate Charlie Christian. And the story of why this guitarist extraordinaire left jazz at the height of his powers and popularity makes the listening that much more compelling. Not gonna tell ya, yule have to find out for yerself! Buy this, you won't be sorry."
