CD Reviews

Downtempo hasn't had this good in a while...
DAC Crowell | 12/30/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As of late, Berlin-based Tresor has mainly concerned itself with the harder end of the techno spectrum. So it was some surprise to me to find this Tresor product prominently stickered 'Music To Slow Down'. And sure enough, this fits that description...and much more. With the likes of Maurizio and 1/2 of Sun Electric sneaking around in the background, TV Victor hands in a double-disc set of long (and I mean _long_...two discs, three tracks only) ambient downtempo workouts that're suitable for a whole lot of situations. They've got a light, low-speed trancy feel. But they also have this very jazzy-loungy feel too, especially on the track that I think is the standout, the 55+ minute 'All'. And to be sure, it's ambient...very suitable as a background for most anything, with 'You' holding up the pure ambience flag very aptly. And while the disc-length 'Agai' is a good piece of work and certainly the attention-getter, again my fave here is 'All', with a smooth lounge-tronic feel that goes down smooth and cool like the finest vodka martini money can buy. For all of you who think ambient is a dead issue, please allow this release to give you a good swift kick in the posterior! Very, very fine work..."
Nice twist on german techno
J. Duncan | New York, NY United States | 02/12/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"i am a huge fan of techno music. however within the genre I have not always been a consumer of the product that comes out of germany. i have found the music somewhat cold and lacking in progression. that's why i was happy to stumble onto this little gem of a recording. track 1 "Agai" is a slowed down dubby/ambient piece that on the surface seems redundant as its syrupy bass line lumbers along. but if you listen closely it is full of little surprises and different accents throughout. i give this band credit for having the patience to sort through a track of this length and surgically determine at what points the accents should be placed.track 2 "All" slows things down even further and takes on a lighter feel through the use of chime-like instrumentation. it is more melodic and less rhythmmic than the first yet equally impressive with subtle references to tubular bells throughout.and in keeping with tradition the last track "You" slows it down even further by a virtual elimination of both rhythm and melody, as it is a collection of ambient sounds and noise.i very nice addition to any techno collection i would think, and a highlight for ambient fans."
