If It Was Longer it Would Get 5 stars
Mr. Books | 05/15/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album is Zack from Pinback's first solo effort. There are only 5 songs, it is less than a half hour long, but it is one of the best albums I have bought this year so far. The music on this album is very reminiscent of Pinback, more so than Three Mile Pilot. It is obvious that Zack does a lot of the songwriting for Pinback.
My favorite track is the last song, Hael...It is based around a simple piano riff and is extremely atmospheric. The music doesn't stray much from the Pinback style, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes consistency can be your greatest accomplishment."

"I found out about Systems Officer today and drove to my local record shop to pick up this e.p.

I like it. It is rhythmic and calm, melancholy and exhilirating. I feel like I can play this over and over - which is the real beauty behind a great e.p. It is produced well and holds some surprises. I know after I have listened to this e.p. five times I will find something new on the sixth listen.

I listen to Pinback with adoration and amazement. When I need something that sounds simple and to the point (like life can sometimes be), I put on Pinback. When I need to hear something complicated and textured (like life can be sometimes), I put on Pinback. I like all kinds of music - most of all rock and roll. For me, Pinback is one of my stranger musical indulgences. I think Systems Officer fits nicely into that niche. I have listened to it only once then decided to post this review. I guess you can say I felt inspired. If that makes your mind up about purchasing this fine record, great. If not, but it anyway. If you are reading this, you want someone to tell you to buy it without actually saying it; well, this e.p. is that good. Buy it.

Blame it on me when you listen to it and realize you were right for purchasing Systems Officer by Systems Officer."
Short but sweet

"as a fan of pinback and three mile pilot, and knowing that zach is a sick bass player, i knew this would be worth picking up. it definitely is good. too bad its not longer. but all 5 tracks are perfect blends of harmony and layering. not too different from pinback, great basslines, almost trip hoppy beats. in pinback, ive always liked zachs higher pitched vocals, and here he tracks those vocals over each other to create some mellifluous sounds. and of course his trade mark basslines rule and the same style gets transferred over to guitar and piano. overall the theme is layered atmospherics and anyone that likes good indie rock will eat this up. i hope zach keeps on producing music for a long time."
