A Grand Beethoven 9th: Highly Underrated Superb Album
01/13/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This lesser known recording of Beethoven's 9th is conducted by Kurt Masur and is performed by the oldest orchestra in the world, the prestigious Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Germany. The soloists are baritone Theo Adama, soprano Edda Moser, tenor is not credited and mezzo soprano Rosamarie Lang. The music has been digitally remastered from the old LP. And it sounds great, brand new. The music is treated with utmost reverence to Beethoven's musical genius. The pacing is neither too slow nor too fast. The chorus is sublime. The opening movement is majestic, powerful and balanced. The Adagio Cantabile is spiritual, lovingly rendered, beautiful and lofty. The soloists are doing an incredible job in their parts. Renowned German baritone Theo Adam was an exemplary Wagnerian bass who sang in Bayreuth during the reign of Karl Bohm and he can be found singing Wotan in the Ring of the Nibelung recordings. Edda Moser is a dramatic German soprano with a powerful and expressive instrument. Her voice is vigorous but beautiful. She can be found in recordings of the Magic Flute (Queen of the Night) under the baton of Wolfgang Sawallisch and as Dona Ana in Don Giovanni under the baton of Lorin Maazel. This is a terrific album and highly recommended.
