Synopsis

One of the nicest things about this series of Dvorák symphonies is that the couplings on each disc are equally interesting, and just as worthwhile as the major works. If you collect all of them, you will get the five late tone poems, the most important overtures, the Symphonic Variations, and also this lovely work for chamber orchestra. Since the performances are idiomatically attractive and very well recorded, you can make this disc the beginning of a very comprehensive collection of Dvorák orchestral music. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Joyful, excellent Dvorak

(5 out of 5 stars)

"While the 9th symphony perhaps enjoys the greatest popularity, the 8th and 7th are my favorites of the well-known Dvorak symphonies.I grew up with Walter's performance with Columbia symphony (CBS/Sony), a beautiful, glowing performance that sings. Another favorite, also beautiful, but full of intensity and perhaps less lyricism, is Dohnanyi on London/Decca with Cleveland.Macal represents a middle of the road, and what a beautiful, engagine performance he and Milwaukee turn out. The music glows where it should, and burns where it must. The orchestra is not Cleveland, but is a beautiful instrument. The engineering is fine, although I would have enjoyed more hall ambience. The Czech Suite is gorgeous music that deserves to be well-known. The forces on this recording bring it to life."
