Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974) is virtually unknown outside of Sweden, but this release should go a long way to accquaint the Western world with this composer's brilliant take on Scandanavian Romanticism. His influences are Brahms and Alfvén and his symphonies tend to be broad and expansive. Symphony 3, of 1916, is called "West Coast Pictures" and very much partakes of the painter's palette. It's both impressionistic and warmly expressionistic, with a heart- rending third movement called "Summer Night." This man's symphonies should be better known than they are. Atterberg's Horn Concerto (1926) is strongly nationalistic and fits the limits of the French horn admirably. --Paul Cook
