Leave it to the powers that be at Deutsche Grammophon to home in on the one weak link in Leonard Bernstein's excellent Beethoven cycle and highlight it in a separate issue! The Fifth Symphony is one of those works that Bernstein understood almost too well--he seems determined to underline and italicize every important moment, and the result sounds a bit labored and generally lacks spontaneity. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The Eighth is tops, though. --David Hurwitz
