Synopsis

Amazon.com
The combination of Christmas and just about any musical genre inevitably produces some true weirdness. In this case, the title says it all; somewhere between jump blues and swing, the music on this CD is at its core an attempt to capitalize on the swing craze. Not that it's badly done, though the vocalist sometimes sounds uncannily like Fozzie the Bear. Many of the songs included here are only to be expected: "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," of course, and "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus." "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch," isn't exactly surprising either. Some intriguingly odd inclusions are "Little Drummer Boy" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," the latter heading for lounge-lizard territory in a big way, so that the result sounds scarily like Barry Manilow. In other words, it's a decidedly mixed bag, but in a way that's a good thing; at worst, it'll make a great conversation piece at the company Christmas party. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Amazon's Reviewer Knows NOTHING.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Genevieve Williams, Amazon's own reviewer, should not be qualified for writing reviews. She knows little about swing music and even less about Christmas music. First off, all records-- if you haven't noticed are an attempt to make money, are an attempt at capitalizing on whatever craze is most popular, hence the term POP MUSIC. Secondly, Fozzie the Bear has a muffled/cartoon voice, the Blues Jumpers singer; Eldridge Taylor has a voice reminiscent of the jazz singers of yesteryear (i.e. Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Joe Williams, etc.). Lastly as far as Christmas music goes, this CD is a refreshing change from the over-played Christmas standards heard in every department store and Christmas party. The Grinch song is not a commonly heard Christmas song, and the original, jazzy, Merry Christmas Baby is a sweet addition. The band's rendition of Little Drummer Boy played in a Benny Goodman-style as well as the Latin-inspired God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen spins this CD away from the typical Swing-Genre Christmas Releases."
