Lionel Hampton was born in April 1908 and was one of the seminal figures in the history of jazz. Famous as a colleague of Benny Goodman, he went on to become a bandleader in his own right and performed virtually until his death in 2002. The purpose of this album is not to merely imitate his music, but to capture its spirit. To this end, four of the musicians on the album actually worked with Lionel Hampton, and brilliantly helped recreate the greatness of the music on this newly recorded project. Those musicians are John Bunch piano, Ken Peplowski clarinet, Warren Vache trumpet and Frank Vignola guitar, aka Swing Masters.
