Search - Svelt :: Shetland Sessions

This four-song EP contains two songs--"Ditty" and "Third Place Heaven"--from Svelt's previous Schizophonic single, as well as two songs--"Gimper" and "Doubtful"--recorded in the same session. Brothers Nate and Chris Slusarenko (previously together in Sprinkler) make up two thirds of this trio, playing drums and guitar/vocals respectively. Musically, Svelt aren't too far from the melodic, guitar-heavy pop rock that Sprinkler did adequately, but they also share many of that band's shortcomings. Two of the biggest are Chris's lack of vocal range and the repetitiousness of some of the riffs. This EP definitely contains some nice hooks, but something more than incessant power chords would help convey them more effectively. Experimenting with open chords and melody lines would make some of the songs just as powerful but a lot more listener-friendly, as would some space for the songs to breathe. --Adem Tepedelen
