CD Reviews

Love boat music?
Gregory M. Hall | Boston, MA USA | 07/18/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"OK it does sound a lot like that Cher song from last year, vocodered voice over disco strings (and you thought Ice Hockey Hair was retro!) all charlies angels on the love boat surface sheen, but in a wonderfully subversive gesture the song is a piss take through & through; the chorus intones: "you've got to tolerate all those people that you hate. I don't love you, but I wont hold that against you." I actually hear a little dub influence on the versus (a vocordered voice rapping rasta style). The b-sides, as with most SFA b-sides, offer quality for your dollar. The video included on the disc to the a-side makes this disc worth the otherwise prohibitive cost of an import single. The logical extension of Guerilla and a good buy. I'm drooling with anticipation for the full disc. So check of that this review was helpful and help me get that gift cert OK?"
You've got to tolerate all that music that you hate

"If wadding through the drogs of *NSYNC and O-Town means the SFA are on the other side, show me the que.Juxtapozed is an excellent single, bounded by the powers that be to debut then fall off the Brit charts, not even released in the US (pitty us poor souls here, but bless those little hearts at amazon.co.uk). This Cher thing above, I don't know, not a big Cher fan, but it is true SFA sound, stright from the Guerilla album mold. I just saw A.I. and the video and song remind me of something that should have been played when they went to "Rogue City" to find the blue fairy. The B-sides are excellent as well. Thank the Brits for caring about the B-sides, Radiohead's last single, Pyramid Song, had in my opinion the best song of the year on it, "The Amazing Sounds of Orgy." Anyway, Tradewinds is a low-key guitar song, very reminiscent of maybe, "Fire in My Heart" but not as lullabie-ish. And Happiness Is A Warm Pun is definitely the highlight of the cd. Booming drum intro, quick guitar signatures, heavy on the southern roots rock of the 60s it is a standout track indeed. But it still maintains the SFA signature with quarky lyrics and mubbled ones at best...similar to "Wherever I lay My phone.."Buy without hesitation, however, get the album, Rings Around The World, it highlights SFA at their finest!!"
SFA a new departure with each album

"Being lucky enough to have already heard "Rings Around The World" in its entirety I can definitely put any fans' worries to rest. True, this first single seams a little too disco-y (at first) and worried me but after a few more listens I got into it. Any SFA fans out there probably don't love them for the A-Sides anyhow. Each album is different from the one before it, same thing for RATW. If you are still worried about the direction the band is going in then the fact that RATW was just nominated for this year's Mercury Music Prize should calm you down. Do yourself a favour and buy RATW, and buy this single as the B-Side "Tradewinds" is nothing short of excellence."
