As they demonstrate on this major label debut, the members of Super 400 aren't terribly experienced, but they're sure familiar with the back catalog of Jimi Hendrix. The band's self-titled disc is filled with jazzy, distorted guitar chords, soulful vocals, and psychedelic elements that recall Jimi's Axis Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland albums. In addition, Super 400's surging rhythms suggest the group has more than a passing partiality for '90s Seattle alt-rock of the Pearl Jam/Soundgarden school. But while they have an appealing arsenal of sounds, their songs are far from super. The album is ultimately a textbook case of style over substance. --Jon Wiederhorn
