NO SUGAR DUMPLING NO SWEET SO!
Locks Lion | Blue Mountain Peak | 03/20/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"THE ROOTS LOVER, 1978-1983: Another top-ranking re-issue set from the Moll Selekta label, this time collecting a series of crucial roots and - yes! - lovers sides from the great Sugar Minott. Each selection is presented in its 12" "disco style" mix, with the dub version spliced in at the end of the original vocal track - along with a couple of DJ outings from Ranking Dread and Sugar himself, for good measure. All-time classics like SLICE OF THE CAKE and NO VACANCY are the obvious highlights, but the lesser-known material isn't necessarily inferior, and the overall quality - including great packaging and sleevenotes - is excellent. I suppose you might say that with two full length CDs included here, there's room for a little bit of padding; but at the end of the day, Sugar's filler material is often as good as, if not better than his contemporaries' best stuff, so no worries really.

More good works from the Moll Selekta vaults: ST. CATHERINE'S IN DUB, collecting fourteen killer dub workouts originally surfacing on the Mr. Tipsy label; and RICH MAN, POOR MAN, a super selection of sufferers anthems from the underexposed Barry Brown. Go get `em!

Extended mixes of prodigious Sugar output
Dm Otis | vancouver | 05/15/2007
(3 out of 5 stars)

"This is material from 12" vinyl releases and several of the cuts sound like the source material was a vinyl copy that may have been played with a rough needle! It should also be noted that the mixes don't qualify as "dub" really - they are more just extended rythms although not unenjoyable. Minott is capable of prodigious output and the quality level on these dancehall releases is remarkably high. Some great lyrics and hooks. This is a highly listenable collection of 12' mixes that otherwise would not have been available. Just a few songs that amount to filler. Sugar Minott -- what a talent!

The packaging is unique and nicely glossy with short but useful notation. Moll-Selekta put some money into this release so you or I donpt have to worrry about tracking down a bunch of obscure records. Enjoy!"
