Synopsis

Following on the heels of the immensely smart, hip Wild Thing (and a string of gems before that), Car Tunes is a top-shelf concept album for kids. Here the theme is utterly simple: these are all tunes associated with cars. From washing them ("Car Wash") to driving them ("Fun, Fun, Fun"), cars are not only the subject matter, but also the place where the Sugar Beats insist Car Tunes ought to be played. Every song has a danceable vibe that goes from big, bright hip-shakers (Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy") to simple snap-alongs, such as Roger Miller's "King of the Road." An especially charming component of "King" and the funky "Mustang Sally" is the colorful use of kids' voices, either as chorus or simple, cute background effect. In their previous work the Sugar Beats have hung their hats on an old-school set of instruments, but here they revel in rhythm tracks and keyboards. But none of that gets in the way of the spirit behind Car Tunes, which is classic Sugar Beats--aimed dually at different generations. Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again" recast as mid-tempo dance pop sung entirely by kids? It works for all involved. --Andrew Bartlett

We're dancing in our seats!

"I have two other Sugar Beats CDs that both my girls (5&6 yrs. old) and I love. When I saw that there was a new one I bought it right away. Well I've always been a fan of dance music and this one definately makes you want to dance. Even in the car. I think "King of The Road" is adorable! And I never liked the song "On The Road Again" but Sugar Beats rendition of it is so good. My girls favorite is "Love Train"."

"If your child is like mine, then they go through developmental phases which demand that the CD of the moment be played over and over and over again. We have survived this CD and it's many replayings, without animosity ( unlike that which I feel for a certian purple dinosaur...)I have other Sugar Beats CD's and this one does not fail to please. I must say that this is one of the very few children's CD's in which the children singing does not annoy the heck out of me. Nice songs, catchy arrangements with lyrics I enjoy and remember. She likes to see Mommy singing along with the tape. You can't go wrong - and you will live to tell the tale!"
FUN for my 3 :-) :-) :-)

"My children (son 7 and twin girls age 5) LOVE the Sugar Beats' music. We listen to it in the car, and we were all thrilled to get "Car Tunes" right before our recent trip to the beach. They especially loved hearing the new songs (new to them, at least!) like Road Runner, Fun, Fun, Fun, and Freeway of Love. Of course, all of these songs were the ones that I grew up listening to, and they wonder how I already know the songs when it is their first time hearing them! This music is a must have for children and their parents who want to keep peace in the family vehicle while traveling.....long car trips or just to the grocery store."
