CD Reviews

Teen Pop Done Right
Jeffrey O. Stevens | Binghamton NY | 06/21/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I was sad to see this album get little or no attention in the US. I heard the single "Hole In The Head" a couple of times on the radio and thought they may actually catch on here, but it was a fluke. It's unfortunate.

In an era where teen bands/singers are more image than talent (Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSync) it is refreshing to find a group that relies on talent rather than a producer's tricks.

The Sugababes were formed by the group's members - not some producer or label. Along the way, Siobhan Donaghy left and was replaced by another childhood friend.

The album has st least six tracks that are single worthy. "Hole In The Head" was a US single release, while "In The Middle", and "Too Lost In You" were released in Europe. Other strong contenders include: "Whatever Makes You Happy" (Complete with samples from Sly Fox's "Let's Go All The Way"), "Siuation's Heavy" and "Conversations Over".

If you have a teenaged daughter in the house, this is a great album to get her for a birthday - mine loves it and plays it constantly and has managed to get many of her friends hooked on it.

Make no mistake - even though the group writes much of its material - they are a pop group. If you're looking for a more rock flavored album, this isn't the one for you. However, if you like smart pop with a catchy chorus and strong vocals, give the Sugababes a try. You won't regret it.

The Best So Far!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I live in Canada where, unfortunatley, there is not much of a following for the Sugababes. That's a shame because the Sugababes are excellent! I have been following them since their first album, but "Three" far surpasses anything they have ever done before! The girls have matured so much and "Three" demonstrates their strong vocals and touching lyrics. If you can get your hands on this album do not pass up the opportunity to buy it!

1)Hole in the Head - Really catchy single. A really funky dance song.

2)Whatever Makes You Happy - For me this song is just okay really, but a lot of other 'babes fans love it.

3)Caught in a Moment - Beautiful song. One of my favourites on the album.

4)Situation's Heavy - Good song. It has great lyrics, a catchy chorus and an awesome beat.

5)Million Different Ways - I love this song. It has an Indian vibe to it and it is really unique.

6)We Could Have it All - Another great track. Kind of mellow, but still funky.

7)Conversation's Over - This song is one of the slower ones on the album. It is really fantastic. The lyrics are probably the best on the album.

8)In the Middle - I think this song is a little immature for this album. It would have been better suited on "Angels With Dirty Faces".

9)Too Lost In You - This song is so beautiful. The girls sound so raw and pure on this song. It was written by Diane Warren who is known for her great love songs. I could listen to it over and over again.

10)Nasty Ghetto - This song will have you dancing all over the place! Wicked beat.

11)Sometimes - Another great ballad from the 'babes. I really like the chorus on this one. It also a great showcase for their songwriting.

12)Maya - Amazing. Sad, but amazing.

The Sugababes are a really talented group and it is too bad they don't have more support in North America. It is hard to compare them to any other act because they are so unique. If you like different pop, especially Brit pop, you should really check them out, and "Three" is definetly their best album.
