Synopsis

Album Description
When Andres Segovia began performing in 1909 he could find very little written for the guitar, consequently he turned to contemporary composers to write for the instrument. 1923 Manuel Ponce heard Segovia perform in Mexico and was inspired to write for him the Sonata Mexicana. Over the next decade Ponce helped Segovia fill his programs with compositions in the style of other composers, since the performance practice of the early twentieth century required the inclusion of music from different historical periods. The elegance, beauty, and technical complexity of these works have longs since eclpised whatever functional purposes they were written for. The music of Ponce has become central to the repetroire of the classical guitar.
