One of the great modern quartets

"It should be obvious from the players involved - Fred Sherry, Harvey Sollberger and even Charles Wuorinen on piano - that this is a top-notch production. The String Quartet is a late work, finished during the brief L-Dopa induced reprieve from Parkinson's the composer had in the late 60s. A possible description of the quartet would be a more lyrical and less disjoint parallel of Carter's Second Quartet. The language and rhythmic complexities are uncompromising, but never unmusical and Wolpe's wit and lyricism pervades throughout. The other pieces on the disc are also strong, particularly the Trio in Two Parts, which is a characteristic early 60s work."
