CD Reviews

Better live than in Studio
D. Nave | Berlin, Germany | 02/22/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Like others, I lost track of the Men in Black as their studio work was just becoming too much fluff. While the current writing has been relative stagnant since Hugh left the band, the two members that replaced him are top notch. The booklet inside the CD gives us a straight forward short history of the members (yesterday and today) of the band. The Stranglers live are surprisingly energetic from every direction and this double CD captured them exceedingly well. If you were ever a Stranglers fan, you cannot lose on this buy. The days of the topless girls dancing on stage with them are long gone, but they pack alot of power in thier show. Simple prescription: buy the CD and try to see them yourself."
BUY THIS LIVE ALBUM!

"As a Stranglers fan from way back, it seems "the new boys" have finally come to grips with the old songs. I've been from "Rattus" to "Ten" and from "In the Night" to "Coup de Grace". These guys ROCK on this album! There's life in ol'Jet yet! The production/sound on this c.d. is killer. The bass is right where it should be on a Stranglers recording: IN YOUR FACE AND UP YOUR NOSE! Paul Roberts is finally coming into his own. This guy has more octaves than fingers. Baz livens things up too.If you want a Stranglers live c.d., this is the one to get. This is a breath of fresh air for any Stranglers fan and a good place to start learning about life after Hugh 'cause,...THERE IS!"
Fine live document of a great band

"They never seem to tour the states, so this is as close as many of us will ever get to a Stanglers show. I had the thrill of seeing JJ tour with Smithereens' frontman Pat Dinizio. The enthusiasm and great bass playing he displayed that night are also a major part of the sound of this live CD. Paul Roberts is a fine lead singer. Baz Warne seems to have capably filled John Ellis' shoes. The band sounds energized. The performances are are faithful. The only reason I don't give this five stars is because there is ample room on the two discs for more Stranglers classics. TIME TO DIE, WALK ON BY, and many other great songs could have been performed to make this a truly incredible value. As it is, this disc proves there's quite a bit of life left in the Stranglers."
