"Marriott's tenure with the Small Faces ended after he stalked offstage during a New Year's Day 1969 performance; he soon recruited ex-Herd guitarist Peter Frampton to form the hard-rock combo Humble Pie, and after months of woodshedding at Marriott's Essex cottage the group issued its debut single "Natural Born Boogie," cracking the UK Top Five. The LP As Safe as Yesterday Is followed, but again American success eluded Marriott until the release of the 1971 Humble Pie live album Performance--Rockin' the Fillmore, which went gold. Although Frampton left the band soon after, 1972's Smokin' was a smash, reaching the U.S. Top Ten; subsequent efforts failed to achieve the same heights, however, and Humble Pie disbanded in 1975. After the release of the solo Marriot, in 1976 he joined in a Small Faces reunion, then four years later re-formed Humble Pie with original drummer Jerry Shirley; after two LPs, the group again dissolved. Marriott spent the better part of the decade in seclusion, but was planning to reunite with Frampton when he lost his life in a house fire on April 20, 1991.

The leader of the legendary `Small Faces', Steve Marriott left the band in 1968 to form `Humble Pie'.

Pie achieved monster status in United States as a Blues Rock band extraordinaire'. Marriott, in a stroke of genius, recruited a very young Peter Frampton as lead guitarist. It was the 1971 album `Rockin' at the Fillmore' that really gained the worldwide success they deserved. Humble Pie broke up 4 years later, and Steve Marriott released his self-titled `Marriott' solo album. Marriott rejoined Humble Pie performing with them until the early 80's with marginal success.

Tragically, Marriott spent most of the rest of decade in semi-seclusion, occasionally touring with the Official Receivers. It was in 1991, after contacting Peter Frampton to co-tour, that a house fire broke out and Marriott perished in the fire.

In this compilation, there are few big hits of Marriott's career. The true singles, Ichycoo Park, Lazy Sunday, and the Humble Pie hits, are not represented here. If you are looking for a true representation of Marriott's career, you must look elsewhere. Although the first 6 or 8 songs on this cd are dated sounding, the rest of the Humble Pie material is solid. This cd is billed by the label as a `specially priced introduction collection' and you get what you pay for.
