CD Reviews

Arguably the most under-rated album of all-time
05/14/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Following his stint with the Sex Pistols, Steve Jones' presence in the music industry has gone virtually unrecognized by the self-important elitist rock critics, who've dismissed him as a punk rock sellout. Shows how much they know about music. His presence on the "Sid & Nancy" soundtrack and Iggy Pop's "Blah Blah Blah" (both in the late 80s) was strong indeed and demostrates his unique abilities as both a first-rate guitarist and songwriter. "Mercy" is one of my favorite albums. Totally unlike a Sex Pistols record, "Mercy" is moody, melodic, and bluesy, kind of like a heavy version of Lloyd Cole or Chris Isaak. It's a real gem. Anyone who pans this album is speaking about something other than the music. Recently, when asked by friends what albums I would most want if stranded on an island, I chose, among others (including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "The White Album," "Hot Rocks," "The Wall," and "Zeppelin's BBC Sessions"), "Mercy." At first they were perplexed. They've since listened and agree how phenomenal a record this is. (Also, Steve Jones just co-produced the Buckcherry premier album; likely the best album of 1999). In sum, any rock collection without "Mercy" is incomplete."

"If your a lover of eighties rock/aor then this is a must for your collection. The ex Sex pistol bounced back in 1987 with his first solo album, the production is awesome and makes all the tracks sound big and meaty, his vocals are a cross between Billy Idol and Charlie sexton. the best track is Mercy."

"foul mouthed punk rocker steve jones releases an album with not a swear word in sight and even sings a love song 'raining in my heart'(best ballad ever)their's not even anything that could resemble anything from his previous bands 'rich kids','sex pistols',instead we have a mid-tempo rock album that would have more in common with billy idol rather than the sex pistols.'mercy' is a solidly brilliant album from start to finish and what keeps it brilliant today 15 yrs after it first hit the shops in 1987 is steve's excellant guitar playing especially his solo on 'pretty baby' thats quite simply out of this world."
