A Surprising Release

"Steve Jolliffe was a member of Tangerine Dream for exactly one album - the controversial "Cyclone", on which he contributed vocals, plus flute, clarinet, and cor anglais. Since then, he has released a steady diet of solo albums, none of which I have heard, though from what I can gather, they are along the same lines as "Cyclone", but not exactly. Because of his contribution to Tangerine Dream, I wasn't terribly interested in his solo releases, but I heard good things about both "Zanzi" and this album, so decided to give it a go. Glad I did. "Omni" is a pure instrumental electronic album in a 90's Berlin School style. No vocals, or woodwinds that I can detect, just long sequencer driven romps. Indeed, some of the sequences are reminiscent of TD's post Jolliffe soundtrack work (particularly "Risky Business"), while others sound like those employed by the British electronic group Arc (not available through Amazon). The second 2 tracks both have some percussion thrown in as well. Like I said, I don't know what his 'sound' was before 1996, but I wasn't really expecting this. Recommended."

"A bit too 'new age' for my taste, but still a well assembled piece of recorded work to be experienced here.Steve Jolliffe was on one (just one) Tangerine Dream album,1978's 'Cyclone'. Three lengthy tracks on this CD,the melodic "Enter" (18:17),"Drift" (16:44)and the atmospheric "Immerse" (21:08),maybe the best of the three.Might appeal to fans of Steve Roach,Klaus Schulze,Tomita and Ash Ra Tempel."
