CD Reviews

Mind-warping guitar technique

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After so many years of hearing Steve play the scene in the Bay Area it's a pleasure to hear him on a CD. He's an incredible finger-style acoustic player, influenced by John Fahey, John Renborn and others but with his own style showing well. The first two tracks, Rivulet and The Turtle Walks are mind boggling--a lot of notes in a small space and he pulls it off well. Other excellent tracks are 7th, Everclear Stomp and the 11th and 12th Gypsy Dreams and the title track Over the Hole. My Bicycle is a good solid almost humorous piece at first but then try to figure out how it is played--the man comes up with some killer picking patterns. Really, this collection should be heard instead of reviewed--Steve has given a great time capsule of his music and soul. Both will continue to evolve and who knows, maybe sometime in the future listeners who hear this recording now will be able to say "I knew him when..." I'm looking forward to future recordings, this one took far too long."
