Stripped-down improvement on "Mind Control"
SteppingRZA | USA | 12/07/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"While the original, full-sound "Mind Control" is arguably Stephen Marley's better solo album of the two he's made, this acoustic version of "Mind Control" largely strips away all the studio production and fancy beats and sounds, putting the focus on Marley's voice and lyrics.

It showcases Marley as the true heir to Bob Marley's legacy. While Ziggy may write better lyrics/songs, and Kymani is the best vocalist among the Marley kids, Stephen really captures Bob Marley's vocalizing style and edge.

While this CD may seem, on the surface, to be more of a companion album, it's just as thorough and rewarding.

For those with an acoustic bent, this is more important of a purchase. But it might also be worth checking out the original just to see how these songs work in both contexts. It might also be pleasantly surprising how the raucous "Chase Dem" works in an acoustic setting. It loses little, if any, of the power and edge of the original."
An album for the original lovers
A. Brumant | Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago | 12/12/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is definitely an album for the lovers. The lover of raw Marley power that is. So, you have bought the original "Mind Control" album and feel in love with the lyrical prowess and production ability of Stephen Marley. You always wondered who was the power behind the second wave of Marley and here he is with his first album. And the album was excellent.

Now comes the Acoustic slant to the album in which he himself claims captures the original vibe he wanted. And capture it did!!! The entire album (including bonus track) is passionate, powerful and raw. It reminds me of some of the concerts he does. The album specifically highlights the vocal range of Stephen as well as his lyrical power.

I don't like to compare the children as each has ther own strengths and pulling power....plus there is no vacancy to fill as Bob is alive and well through his music. However, if you are looking to re-kindle that Marley passion that you feel during his live performances, look no further than this album.

My personal favourites - Lonely Avenue, The Mission, Traffic Jam, the bonus track Someone to Love...........who am I kidding? I love them all!!! LoL!
