CD Reviews

New Horizon - Stella Schindler
Paul in DC | 11/28/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Judging by the sophistication of the lyrics, music and production, this would seem to be a major release. However, I can't seem to find any record company's name on this anywhere. However, that's no matter, for this CD puts to shame many albums by bigger companies and bigger names. Like another Washington area artist, Eva Cassidy, Stella Schindler seems to be an entirely homegrown talent. The songs tend toward the thoughtful and reflective, though the faster songs are convincing as well. Standouts are the title track - a refreshing walk along the boundary of rock and country, "Sunday Again" - a meditation on the meaning of music, life and struggle, and "Molly's Lullaby" - complete with weeping mandolins and a wheezing organ that invoke a vision of rural desperation without sentimentality or condescention. Throughout the album, the level of writing, singing and playing is remarkable - there really isn't a bad (or even an average) song on the record - it is rather surprising that someone with this sense of command and vision could still be unknown... The last example I'll cite is the stunning blues number "Fill Me Up" and "Skipping Stone", which confirm that even without a band, Schindler's singing can still rivet your attention and make your hair stand on end. In short, if you haven't heard of her, you probably will soon. This is one of the more remarkable folk/rock/country albums of 2001. Do yourself a favor and get it now - you won't regret it, and in time you may even find yourself ahead of the curve."
