CD Reviews

Music that will fascinate any Dan fan
Gordon M. Wagner | Suburbia | 08/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"These are ancient demos that have been circulating for decades. They're not full-blown Steely Dan songs. They are, however, fascinating historical documents, like reading a great author's early work."
Steely Dan rarities

(4 out of 5 stars)

"There's a reason why the price for admission on this disc is so high. These are early Steely Dan sides from 1971 to 1972. While the Steely Dan here sounds very different than the Steely Dan that recorded tracks like 'Do It Again' and 'Reelin In The Years,' it is still no doubt Becker and Fagan.

The original 'Any World That I'm Welcome To' is worth the price of the whole disc alone. This is incredible, and while it's nowhere near as good as the album version, it's still pretty darn good.

My reasoning for the four stars is not the music. All of it is five star material, no doubt. My problem is the sound quality. I know, these are rare studio demos that have been hidden from the public for years, but the least they could do was try to remaster the recordings. There is some tape hiss and pops that are pretty audible.

Overall, if you are a Dan collector, buy this release, even though it is very pricey. Otherwise, if you are just starting your Steely Dan collection, go buy 'The Definitive Collection,' 'A Decade of Steely Dan,' or 'Remastered: The Best of Steely Dan.' All of those are great options.

This is recommended for the Steely Dan collector, but obviously, this is not for the casual or new Steely Dan fan."
