Synopsis

Album Description
During the '60s, Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott were an inseparable team in the studio, on the bandstand, and at home as husband and wife. A Chip off the Old Block is one of the best of their many classics during this decade. This tribute to Count Basie features signature tunes by Basie, Neal Hefti, and Frank Foster, but this quintet featuring Blue Mitchell puts its own "Blue Note Sound" spin on these big band classics. Issued on CD for the first time, the Rudy Van Gelder remaster includes two bonus tracks from an aborted septet made a week earlier.

CD Reviews

Another Fine Van Gelder Remaster
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 04/02/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"My journey with the music of Stanley Turrentine began years ago with Salt Song. It was that and other CTI Turrentine LPs that formed the core of my collection of his recordings. For the last several years, I have been going deeper into his back catalog and finding great records that I hadn't known about and which were mostly made before my time.

A Chip Off the Old Block is yet another one worth having. You don't have to be a Turrentine nut to like it, you just have to have the ear for some great jazz. Sure, the organ of Shirley Scott sounds dated, but she sure plays it well! As the liner notes hinted, it gives the music that late-night feel. My favorites here are the smoky Midnight Blue, the snappy Blues In Hoss' Flat, and the swinging Cherry Point.

This CD is yet another fine Rudy Van Gelder remaster. It is accompanied by an attractive and informative insert containing pictures, album info, the original liner notes, and some contemporary commentary. If you like your jazz with a tinge of blues and a lot of swing, then A Chip Off the Old Block may be for you. The price is surely right!"
