Synopsis

Album Description
Minneapolis mood rockers Standbye return with "The Coping Mechanisms," the highly-anticipated follow-up to 1999's "Days Spent Waiting" (Guilt Ridden Pop) and their first release on 2024 Records. After garnering substantial press coverage and peaking at number 51 on CMJ Top 200 with "Days Spent Waiting," Standbye took some time off to regroup. They emerged in the winter of 2001 with rekindled fervor, and entered Seedy Underbelly studios (Semisonic, Alva Star, Kid Dakota) with producer/engineer Jaques Wait, fresh off a stint working with Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band). The music ranges from charging, intricate rock to the haunting minimalism of cello, guitar, and singer Sally Grayson's unmistakable voice lamenting the loss of a loved one. After visiting a distraught friend in New York City just days after 9/11, Sally penned "Don't Panic, Don't Panic, Don't Panic," a song that respects the sadness of the events while voicing impatience with simple answers and pleading for comprehensive justice.

Like a box of chocolates....

(4 out of 5 stars)

"One never knows what a new cd will sound like. This is the case with Standbye's newest. I bought it hoping it would be like "Days Spent Waiting" and for the most part it is. The first two songs, The Burning Yards and Let Then Eat Cake are not like anything on the other cd, they are still really good. The rest of the album sounds much more like "Days Spent". Don't Panic, Jesus Drives the Detox Bus and Wayside Rest are the three catchiest songs. Again Standbye's lyrics are still unique and intriguing. The album is really good. Hell, it is great. Each time I listen to it is becomes better. Usually I do not like local music, but Standbye is a local band that sounds wonderfull. This album is worth buying."
